Remember Those Fabulous '80s?

And speaking of The Monkees, as we were for sad and obvious reasons yesterday, here's their 1986 comeback MTV-era single "That Was Then, This is Now."

I'd forgotten what a cute record this was. The production is a little too decade-specific for my taste, but the song itself -- by power pop cult figure Vance Brescia of The Mosquitos -- is put together like a charm, and I defy anybody to listen to the track without smiling at some point.

That's a good tune. I'd completely forgotten about it.

The Arista CD that this was originally released on was *so poorly mastered* -- that it was one of the only CDs I ever actually returned and complained about.

The 3 "new" songs sounded fine, but everything else sounded like a scratchy vinyl needle drop played on a Fisher Price Record Player. Recorded in another room over two tin cans.

You've been defied. I hate that 80's keyboard sound, the song is way too formulaic for my taste, and Dolenz pours on the cuteness too thickly ("tay-yake"). Lastly, they should have let Davy sing it.

Maybe it's just my foul mood today.

Hey -- wait till you hear what I'm thinking of posting on Monday.

Please tell me it's not "Somebody Must Have..."
Things are crappy enough.

Here's my (technically) second favorite Davy tune... and my favorite Monkees "video" ever!

I remember this one well. Wasn't it coupled with a cover of Paul Revere's "Kicks."

I forgot to mention yesterday as an interesting side note: Jones made a seasonal home by my alma mater in central PA. I've been having fun reading my old classmates' reminiscences of sharing a barstool with the guy. I got a friendly "hello" as we passed each other on the sidewalk, although he didn't know me from Adam. A thoroughly pleasant and unpretentious guy, by all accounts.

I met Davy once in the mid-70's at a Mike Nesmith concert (at a hippie-temple-type-place in Santa Barbara, with about 50 people in the audience). Davy had come up from L.A. to see his old bandmate, apparently for the first time in several years. He was incredibly friendly and unpretentious. Luv those first four Monkees albums (plus bits & pieces from the next few) - and Head remains one of my favorite films ever. Since you're showcasing latter-day Monkees, what about Justus and the TV special that accompanied it (circa 1995)?

If I remember correctly, the version of "Whole Wide World" from this was pretty cool too.

I haven't heard Justus in ages, but my memory of it isn't good.

See, this is what age does to us. Although I loved the Monkees, I could NOT TOLERATE this song when it came out. Now, you're right -- it sounds cute. And, it's ok. (But I still prefer their cover of Kicks that Geor3ge mentioned above.)

I got through a whole minute without even coming close to cracking a smile. It sounds just a bad as the picture on the post.

Nice pop tune - Dolenz was under rated as a pop vocalist. But as I understand it, Davey did not want to have anything to do with this tune. Was not on stage when it was played. Too bad.

Monkees are like family - warts and all. Do they deserve to be in the R&R Hall of fame? (Or is the R&RHOF relevant?).

No matter what - Paul Revere and the Raiders so. Shameless plug.

While I was glad to hear this on the radio (since I'm a big Monkees fan-boy), I liked the Mosquitos version/original better.
