Wednesday Moment of "I Don't Know What the Fuck I Think About This"

The Beatles 2: McCartney Jr. Hints At 2nd Generation Reunion
By Jacob Kleinman | Apr 03, 2012 11:17 AM EDT

McCartney, Lennon and Harrison may be getting back together again, according to Sir Paul McCartney's son. James McCartney, son of the Beatles bass-playing leader, recently told the BCC that he has spoken with John Lennon's son, Sean, and George Harrison's son, Dhani, and the three of them were "up for it."

"Sean seemed to be into it," James added. "Dhani seemed to be into it. I'd be happy to do it."

The only hold out appears to be Ringo Starr's son, Zak Starkey.

"I don't think it's something that Zak wants to do," said James McCartney. "Maybe Jason [another of Starr's sons and also a drummer] would want to do it."

Asked if "The Beatles 2" was really a possibility, James McCartney responded with vague optimism.

"Yeah, hopefully, naturally," he said. "I don't know, you'd have to wait and see. The will of God, nature's support, I guess. So yeah, maybe."

James McCartney is an accomplished singer-songwriter. in his own right and has played guitar on two of his father's albums (Flaming Pie and Driving Rain). He is planning to follow in the Beatles footsteps by playing a show at the famous Liverpool venue, The Cavern Club, where the Beatles performed before getting famous.

He told BBC that as a schoolboy his dream was to be even "better than The Beatles," adding, "I'm not sure if I can do that. If anything, I would love to be equal to The Beatles -- but even that's quite tough."

Actually, all I'm gonna say is -- if this happens, Julian's gonna be REALLY pissed.

edward, not even.

The first 2 words that come to mind are "pathetic" and "sad."

Actually, I think if these kids want to get together and make music just for fun and their own personal amusement, I have no problem. I might even get a kick out of eavesdropping.

If they try to tour this or make a record that is offered for sale, however, I have serious qualms.

Why would anybody set themselves up for the obvious -- and clearly unfavorable -- comparisons? Maybe they should call themselves The Four Masochists.

Let's hope they have the collective good sense to smother this idea in the crib.

I don't know what's so terrible. No one, not even the sons, think this is REALLY "Beatles 2."

Have you heard James McCartney's EPs? Pretty strong. How about both of Dhani's projects? Love them both. Sean is a freak, but I don't see this as some abomination or mortal sin. Talented kids making some music. Why not?

Maybe they should do a sort Wilbury's act. As long as they don't call it The Beatles anything.

Poor Julian. He really has gotten the short straw!

Actually, "The Beatles Anything" is a great name.

There already was a Beatles Costello.

Seriously.

Frankly, I think James should have contacted Denny Laine's kids.

I agree with Sal N. Why not? I really doubt we'll hear any real good original music from them, but why not try? They certainly have the pedigree. Another thing - these are young men. We are old men. I can guarantee they could care less what a bunch of old farts think.

Only if they call themselves The Lucky Sperm Club.

Does Pete Best have any offspring?

I really have zero problems with this. For one thing, none of them need the money. And they all have a certain amount of "accomplishment" on their own. Sounds like they're just in it for the fun. I'd be happy if all they did were covers of "dad's" tunes - saw Julian close one of the shows on his first tour with "Day Tripper" and it was fucking awesome!

And speaking of "Beatles Costello":

Sean did a cover of "This Boy" on some awards or tribute show a few years ago.

It was to die for. Seriously.

I don't know, I'm probably against this. Judging from these three pimples' solo music, they're not that good. Together, I think it would be a train wreck. They shouldn't name the band anything even close to The Beatles. It would be an embarrassment to their fathers.

Zak's too busy being a really good drummer, and Julian is too old.

If they get together and sparks fly, why not?

Actually, I can't disagree with that.

FD13NYC--listen to Fistful Of Mercy and tell me you didn't find 5 great songs, all reminiscent of "All Things Must Pass."

Considering George has worked with Dhani, James with Paul and Zak with Ringo, I doubt that any of this would be an embarrassment.

May I remind everyone of the solo output of said Beatles? "Stop & Smell The Roses." "Gone Troppo." "Pipes Of Peace."

Everybody needs to take off the cranky pants.

If they make music worth listening to, great - we need all of that we can get. I would be put off if they traded significantly on the Beatles' name though.

And totally understand why Zak Starkey wouldn't participate - he's already made a name for himself as one of the better drummers around (although it always amuses me that he's much more reminiscent of Keith Moon than Ringo...)

@cthuluh

That's 'cause Keith taught him to play. For real.

we could have a battle of the bands... stone's offspring vs. beatle's offspring.... vs. who offspring vs. kink's offspring vs. country joe and the fish offspring vs etc.

I think Zack even referred to him as "Uncle Keith" ... he and Townshend have real chemistry on stage.

As far as the Beatles kids playing together, sure, why not? Just don't do it in public. :-)

Over the years, I've met many folks who despise the Beatles (and surprisingly vitriolic about it, too). So the first thing I thought when reading this was:

"At last, Beatles we can all agree to hate!"

Come together!
All you need is loathe.

Would love to hear their music, but if its sold with hype invoking the Beatles, I'm gonna be sick...

Everyone does realize it was April 1st recently, right?
