A Lump of Coal Week (Best and Worst Rock Xmas Songs): Part I -- "Tried to Smoke A Rubber Cigar" Edition

From the absolutely fantastic 1991 alt-rock Christmas compilation A Lump of Coal -- thematic unity, people --

--- please enjoy the incomparable Odds and their gloriously Crazy Horse-ish version of "Kings of Orient."

Those guys are gods in Canada, BTW.

But hey -- Canada, right?

Good version. I found the Odds through Jesse Valenzuela of the Gin Blossoms who has worked with Craig Northey from the Odds. They co-wrote the theme song to "Corner Gas" a big hit show in Canada (and worth watching on Amazon IMDB in the states.)

I first became aware of the Odds when the opened for Warren Zevon while he was touring in support of Mr. Bad Example in1991/1992. They were quite good (yes, they played “Wendy Under the Stars”), and after their opening set, they came back out as Zevon’s backing band and were damned good in that role. Great show.
