And speaking of pioneering rock critic Richard Meltzer:

He invented the heavy metal umlaut thing.

dave™© said...: Man, I used to love Meltzer in the early 70s. He wrote some great stuff in "Creem," particularly. I still remember his review of an Elvis Christmas album that began (paraphrasing slightly) "Spiritual Christmas is dead, no use reviving that worthless corpse."

There was also a great photo of him in a Nick Tosches article about booze, where Meltzer is standing in front of a liquor store with a bottle in his hand, making Charles Bukoswki look like Bert Parks hosting the Miss America pageant. The caption read "Rock writer R. Meltzer contemplates buying more."; 3/26/2007 2:37 PM

Like copyright dave, Creem was one of the rock rags I rarely missed.

The first issue I ever bought was in late 72. The entire mag was devoted to the Stones and Exile on Main Street, I seem to remember.; 3/27/2007 7:49 AM
