An Early -- And Frankly Quite Terrifying -- Clue to the New Direction

I really don't quite know what to make of this, but from who knows when on what seems to be a cable access show from who knows where, please enjoy -- if that is even possible -- somebody named Record Man lipsynching to the sublime "Marlena" by The Four Seasons.

I should add at this point that over the years I've taken a great deal of crap from people over my fondness for the Seasons and this song in particular, and usually I'm defiantly unapologetic about it.

In this case, however, I am heartily sorry.

That said, a coveted PowerPop No-Prize will be awarded to the first reader who gleans the clip's relevance to the theme of tomorrow's Weekend Listomania.

OMG.

Cover versions that make you want to blow the perpetrator's brains out -- and then your own?

I'm not clicking the arrow. The still frame is scary enough!

And so I have no idea.

Who the hell is giving you crap about liking the 4 Seasons?

Songs by bands whose genre is difficult to label.

Well, not crap lately. But like I said, over the years...
:-)

But noo.

You can pretend it's a 1970s aerobics show from the former Czechoslovakia, if you leave the music off.

Why is that strange sleeveless man doing the Mouse? Oh, he stopped. Good. No, wait, he's doing it again ...

Anyway . . .

Re: Listomania themes. Videos that help explain the decline of the US's international standing? Guys with explosed shoulders not really worth showing off? Jersey boys and the girls who dance with them?

Songs that have dance instruction? Songs by one guy and two girl backup singers?

Oh, and by the way, I love The 4 Seasons also.

No, no and no. Did I count right?

Anyway, nobody's got it yet. Although it has something to do with the band, rather than the song specifically.

you've already done Italian singers and groups fairly recently, I think.

Quartets?

Groups with a number in their name?

Groups named after meteorological calendar divisions (unless you did that already also)?

Groups who had a member that also produced other people.

New Jersey musicians.

Your From Jersey? I'm From Jersey!

Bands who have recorded songs under a different name? (yes, I know about Don't Think Twice).

Seasonal Songs?

steve simels said...

Not really.

Songs that mention seasons.
Songs that reference "classical" music (Vivaldi).

First of all, no one should dis the Four Seasons. Just listen to their backing tracks - they're almost as good as Motown of the era.

As far as the Listomania: Bands whose shortest member was the lead singer? (i.e., I got nothin')

Bands whose material got worse and worse after 1965?

Musical acts connected to Broadway shows.

I LOVE "Marlena" enough to watch this all the way through, and what a dancefest: That guy did not just break into the Soupy Sales Mouse, during the roop-dee-doops, he also did the Freddie and tossed in a bit of the Curly Shuffle! So versatile....
