Dispatches From the Front

The Zombies Odessey and Oracle show in New York City last night was...well, words fail me.

I don't have any live footage, but here's Chris White singing "A Butcher's Tale" in London last year, with Rod Argent on the pump organ, which should give you an idea.

And may I just say, and for the record, that Chris White is now my favorite bass player. But beyond that, I want to BE Chris White.

I should also add that a great deal of the credit for how good the band sounded is due to the splendid Darian Sahanaja, of Wondermints/Brian Wilson band fame, who contributed additional keyboards and vocals.

After he did Butcher's Tale in DC the other night, there was a several minute standing ovation. I hope Chris is enjoying this as much as the audience was!

Will see in 2 weeks. By then they should be warmed up. Nice that they are doing two sets. Did they have any additional singers besides Darian? I don't think I've ever been to a rock show where I had to sit in a pew. How reverend is that?

VR–I'll see you there, figuratively, anyway. Though I'm told that the venue (The Saban Theatre in Beverly Hills) is sonically pretty great, it irks a little that I'm going to be under the roof of anyplace with AIPAC dope Haim Saban's name on it.

But I'm *SO* looking forward to it; glad that Darian's involved (nice guy, friend of a friend and great musician); and that I'll actually get to see the Zombies! Playing O & O! And I'm hopeful for some other 60s stuff (Gotta Get A Hold Of Myself, for one, would be nice) too...

And though this should've been in comments for the previous post, just how great was Clint Ballard, Jr., composer of "Gotta Get A Hold Of Myself", "You're No Good" (go find the YouTube of the original version by Dee Dee Warwick NOW), and "I'm Alive"? Yeah, "Game Of Love" too, but that's not a patch on the others. IMHO.

Now feeling REALLY Bad I didn't get tickets. How would you describe the sound quality at the Ethical Culture Society facility? I have yet to see a show there.

Ethical Culture wouldn't be my first choice for a rock venue; the sound was meh in the first non-O&O set (which had a lot of dross, IMHO) but much better when they did the album.

In the album set, there were at least two additional vocalists besides Darian -- a woman whose name I didn't catch and Jim Rodford, the bass player in Rod and Colin's regular touring band. Everybody involved seemed to having a ball, by the way.

Will be catching them in scenic Merrillville, IN on Friday. Very excited to hear that Darian Sahanaja is traveling with them. As much as I appreciate Chris White, I really want to grow up to be Darian S. What could be better than backing up Brian Wilson & the Zombies?

The woman backup singer is Vivienne Boucherat, Chris White's wife.

I did not know that. Thanks for the heads up.

Just in case this little fact got lost on anyone, Chris White wrote half of Odessey & Oracle all by his lonesome. That second set in NY was everything I hoped for and more.

The pump organ is from 1896, but not the one originally used.

I saw the show at the Keswick Theatre in suburban Philadelphia, PA, on the 11th. It was just fabulous. All of it. Chris's "Butcher's Tale" was in some ways the performance of the night just because he was there to do it. Colin's vocals are as good as ever, and Rod's fingers fly like wildfire over the keyboards. Darian's vocals were the perfect choice, especially since some of O&O has Beach Boys-style harmonies.

Re: the sound at Ethical Culture in NY, I'd heard it wasn't good even before this show. However, there was something with the sound at the Keswick during the first half of the show. My friend who saw the show in CT the other night said that the first half of his show had a little distortion, as well. In both cases, the sound was fine in the 2nd half for O&O. Not sure what this is about except that maybe levels were set for the 2nd half?
