Despite All the Complications....

Wow...apparently New York City has a real rock and roll radio station again. WRXP FM 101.9.

And dig what songs they played in their opening hour....

And if that's not promising enough, I just tuned in for the first time and they segued from the Allman Brothers into this:

Fastball? Hmm. I think I could get to like the place....

But you have to endure 30 minutes of commercials. How was the DJ banter? A mercenary or someone who knows the music?

I've been playing WRXP in my high school art classroom and it's gone over pretty well with the kids. Is the station perfect: no, is it good: no, but it is the first listenable rock & roll station in NYC since WPIX 28 years ago. No if they'd only start playing some roots rock.

I live in the 'burbs, so I don't know how well you can pick them up in the city proper, but 107.1 (The Peak) in Westchester is a better version of this particular format.

BTW, did you know that 102.7 actually unloaded the WNEW call letters - they now belong to a station in West Palm Beach!

Fastball song is a blatant Elvis Costello ripoff. We can do better.

The Fastball song is a rip-off of the Beatles doing Besame Mucho. I think it's hilarious and wonderful....
