You Tuesday Moment of Words Fail Me: Special Marshall Crenshaw Gets Rich! Edition

From 2000, please enjoy in stupefied amazement manufactured Brit pop group S Club 7...

...as they cover Marshall's classic "Someday Someway."

If truth be told, I had never heard of S Club 7, who were apparently concocted by the same management that foisted the Spice Girls on an unwitting mankind, until I stumbled across this clip on YouTube yesterday.

And frankly, I don't know what's more amazing -- that somebody connected with this "band" was smart enough to cover the song, or the fact that it's actually not bad at all.

Once again proving that a well written song has an inherent quality that can withstand all sorts of 'updates'.

well, of course it's not bad; the original is SO GOOD.

Oddly, I heard "Someday Someway" - Crenshaw's version - playing at the grocery store yesterday.

They had a Saturday morning kids show too, which strangely featured Linda Blair as their manager!

I've heard worse covers. But you really can't mess this song up it's so good. Not bad, really.

I agree with FD13NYC about the songs being so good. As far as I'm concerned, pretty much all of the songs on Marshall Crenshaw's debut album are imperishable. And no matter what anyone does to them, I reckon it'd be impossible for any of those songs to be ruined. (Well, maybe if an artist such as Nick Cave or Lady Gaga or Mumford & Sons had a go at one of them...)

I could stand about a minute and a half of it. Not really good but I do love the song and remembering it while listing to this version got me through what I could take.

And Mumford and Son -
talk about your whey faced prog rockers. They are the unplugged version. Too cute. I like some prefer a bit more guts. They make me think of rainbows and puppies.

I do hope Marshall pocketed a nice penny or two from this cover. They came close to ruining it, but it is pretty durable. I remember seeing that S Club 7 show once. Awful. The Spice Girls movie was much better.

Someone was smart enough to cover this masterpiece but not smart enough to listen to the lyrics. The "narrator" of this song is not going to succeed with this girl.

My kids watched this all the time. I was gobsmacked one time when it finally occurred to me I was listening to a Marshall cover!

There's a nice re-recording of Someday Someway on his latest EP. He calls it Someday Some Other Way!

The Banana Splits had better acting chops than exhibited in that little video.

I only knew of them (Hannah Spearritt) because one of their member ended up starring in a UK show I quite like called Primeval.

It was kind of like finding out Doctor Who's Billie Piper was a pop star in the UK prior to going into acting.
