What's in a Name?

Holy crap -- I actually love a new album by a young artist that was released in 2015!

Giddens may be old news to you guys -- cut me some slack, I'm a geezer -- but I hadn't heard of her until a month ago when I stumbled across the video version of that New Basement Tapes project that Elvis Costello chaired last year (Giddens steals it, BTW). In any case, it's pretty obvious that she's the real deal.

I should add, however, that I have some kind of a mental block -- perhaps because of the fact that she's named after a Stevie Nicks song -- that forces me to mangle her moniker. The other day, I actually referred to her as Persimmon Gilgamesh.

Feel free to come up with your own.

Hello all...no, please remain seated,

Been wanting to give that project a listen. Hey, you know how they illuminated their sheet music while recording? They used New Basement tapers. Ya know what pets they kept have while recording? New Basement tapirs. (I kill myself sometimes).

I'll be here all week...try the veal.

I love this album.

She can also, for what it's worth, play the shit out of a kazoo:

WTF, funny you should bring her up.

I'm seeing her tonight in Solana Beach with Bhi Bhiman. Got the tix a while back on recommendation of the person who books the talent there when buying tix for the Herb Alpert / Lani Hall show. Only know her from the Basement Tapes record. Hope she has a little more fun than that in concert. And that she doesn't take herself too seriously and find herself too important. I'm worried about that.

Still recovering from Sinko De Pinko yesterday. Dave Alvin and Los Lobos and, later, Jerry Jemmott.

The Giddens album, TOMORROW IS MY TURN, is earnest. Earnest in a Mimi Farina, early Joan Baez, and early Buffy Sainte-Marie sort of way.

By the way, Buffy Sainte-Marie's new album's streaming at NPR (http://www.npr.org/2015/04/30/403277165/first-listen-buffy-sainte-marie-power-in-the-blood#playlist).

Maybe Giddens' album would've been better served if it was a little less earnest and a little more Jim Varney.

Uh oh. I don't want a singing lecture about important female artists. Say it ain't so. I'm hoping it's not.

Well, at least the surf's pretty cool at Swami's. And there's always Lou's Records and the Chart House.

For what it's worth, you might like another new and much acclaimed artist: Courtney Barnett. To me, a mix of Nirvana, Lou Reed and Dylan/early Bruce.
Check out the song Dead Fox... Quite poppy.

Barnett's the real deal. Oh yes, she is.

I've heard Barnett and like her attitude. Haven't decided about the music yet.

Not only does Giddens have a bit of an Odetta thing going on, but Courtney Barnett's got one too.

On Barnett's first proper U.S. release, the final track on A SEA OF SPLIT PEAS is Ode to Odetta (see https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xnq_42aIvC4).
