[The idea for today's EQ popped into my head unbidden recently when I happened to hear that Corrs song I posted yesterday. My immediate reaction was "I must have done that one sometime in the past," but a check through the blog archives suggested otherwise, which pleases me no end. Anyway, it's such a great idea let's get to it right away, shall we? -- S.S.]
Okay.
...and your favorite (or least favorite) post-Elvis pop/rock/soul/folk girl group (in the 60s sense, i.e. they just sing and dance) or all-girl band (that plays its own instruments) is...?
Discuss.
No arbitrary rules, except that the aforementioned Corrs -- for obvious reasons, i.e. that one of them is a guy -- aren't eligible.
Okay, my least favorite?
I have tried to like those gals for years, and with a total lack of success. They're great on paper, i.e. they're all terrific musicians, and I understand why people are pushing to get them into the Hall of Fame, but sorry -- their records are snoozeville. They simply didn't rock.
And my favorite? Well, I was gonna go with The Bangles, who I adore and have since I played their debut album to death back in 1984...
...but then I remembered these currently active California punkettes.
I mean, for the name and the t-shirt alone.
I should add that you can find out more about Les Hormones -- and watch some of their other equally hilarious videos -- over at their official website HERE.
Alrighty then -- who would YOUR choices be?
And have a great weekend, everybody!!!

Aretha Franklin was a group or a band? 😎
Have to agree with the Bangles (recently got to meet Vicki with John Cowsill!). Have to disagree about Fanny - yeah, they didn't really get captured well on record, but they rock enough. Surprised you didn't mention the MonaLisa Twins - maybe because they aren't a full band? IF you allow them, I want to add Dea Matrona who can rock (but have a couple of guys backing them up on tour).
Mona Lisa twins are definitely a girl group. They're like the Everly Sisters. 😎
Ronettes, Supremes, TLC, Pointer Sisters, Wonder Women of Country
Least fav: Bananarama, Spice Girls
“Sophie Tucker”
(Obscure Beatle reference)
Jai Guru Dave
Ditto on Fanny. Records weren't great, but they were killer live, saw them twice. That Beat Club release demonstrates it.
Oh, where to begin?
Current faves Pacifica are on tour now (in NYC on April 15)
Perennial darlings Dea Matrona - 2nd album about to drop
Hinds - funnest band on the planet
NOBRO - Riot Grllz with bona fide great tunes
Hall of Famers: The Donnas, L7, Go-Gos
Agree re: Fanny. They had the chops but not the material.
I liked the Spice Girls when they added the Jewish girl from Long Island. Jappy Spice. 😎
The Roches
Heart
Martha and The Vandellas
They will go down in Rock history for
"Heatwave" - as one of the greatest.
Can't think of say a Supremes song covered by a garage band.

This one kills me every time
Pussy Riot checks all the boxes for me.

Stray Cats did a fine cover of You Can’t Hurry Love. Not quite garage, but a nice rendition.
Alright, alright, if it has to be a girl group:
The New York Dolls!
Ain’t I a stinker?

Ronettes. I know a lady from the Philippines that only listens to them.... 24/7.
I saw what you did there.😎
Frightwig, Slant 6, L7, Supremes, Donnas.
I just know Fanny from their live covers of Hey Bulldog, Badge and Last Night I Had A Dream -- which may all be on the Beat Club vid you posted (I haven't watched it yet) -- and I don't agree that they didn't/don't rock. However, as I don't know their original material, I can't speak to that.
C in California
The Surfragettes
Goldie and the Gingerbreads (this last one I haven't actually heard - I just love the name)
"The Warning" - Sisters based band from Mexico - worth listening to - almost PowerPop
And finally to totally fuck with your heads I unleash the nuclear bomb of female led rock bands: All bow down before the greatest girl group ever (accordingly to many people who should know better) - The Shags!!!
The Evil Captain Al
Automatic is a band that I'm only now catching up with. Sort of a Kraftwerk/VU hybrid from three L.A. women. No guitars but very catchy:

from the old days, of course the Ronettes and the Supremes - Bangles, Heart, Trio: Dolly Parton/Linda Rondstadt/Emmy Lou Harris - newer acts I think of include the Mona Lisa Twins, Larkin Poe with their at-home duo covers, Dea Matrona - in this category I can think of a couple of bands that from my perspective deserve a discouraging word - but different strokes for different folks - they float somebody's boat - in this world in which we live in, we all need a little help from our real, imaginary, and virtual friends
They were actually terrific. Led by the future Genya Ravan, and the Rolling Stones loved them. Check out their videos on YouTube.
Oooh -- I'm definitely gonna check them out. Thanks!!!
The Divinyls.
Shelby Lynne
Hate to add one more - a 3 piece, kinda
Knacky band - Hex Ex
Rainbow Shiner
Pandoras

I detest anything/everything I've heard from 4 non blondes.
Adored by the same people that love Captain Beefheart
Ex Hex - wanna know what that garage band sounded like back then? "Fox On The Run' - The Sweet. Did we really sound like this when we played in our backyard ?
I give you ...Google/YouTube 😉
