Sold American!

The most iconic instrument in rock history is now for sale on eBay.

And the starting bid is $4,995.

I find it hard to believe this is genuine, but apparently it is -- the very same tambourine the late Gene Clark played on The Byrds' Mr. Tambourine Man single and album in 1965.

I really don't know what I think about this. I can tell you, though, that I once had the privilege to hold in my hand the actual original eight-track master tape of that song and, silly as it may sound, I had a feeling that verged on the religious.

David Crosby used to complain that Gene always played the tambo out of time.

But of course, DC is a fuckwit.

The story has always been that Roger McGuinn is the only band member actually playing on the song, with the rest of the playing done by "The Wrecking Crew" studio group(David Crosby and Gene Clark provided only harmonies, while Chris Hillman and Michael Clarke supposedly aren't on the single at all). So is the actual tambourine man on the record Clark, or Hal Blaine, or another session musician?

If Gene Clark's tambourine is going for $5,000 then Roger (Jim) McGuinn's Rickenbacker should go for about a quarter million.

So what would other legendary R & R instruments go for?

As far as I know the tambourine on both sides of the single is Gene.

There's no question, of course, that it's him on the rest of the album...

But what about the original master tape of Bill Shatner's version?
