Unsolicited Song of the Week (An Occasional Series)

From Melbourne, Australia and his on-going A Single Per Month project, please enjoy antipodean singer/songwriter Stuart Smith and his May 2010 entry, the uplifting earworm of a pop confection "Better Off in Front."

I'm not sure who or what exactly this one reminds me of, stylistically -- Lloyd Cole maybe? -- but I love the air around the instruments, the way the arrangement is layered, Smith's breathy vocal, and just the whole thing, actually, including what's been called the Right Three Chords. Cool guitar stuff, too.

For more on Smith, including downloads for some other songs from the album in progress, here's a link to his estimable website.

Doesn't do anything for me, but I do admire these artists who are using the net to get themselves heard.

Have you checked out Elliot Wilder? Guy must write & record 24 hours a day, he releases a new song every couple of days and has something like 28 albums worth of stuff available for free download.

Wow, that is one good sounding mp3. That does not happen that often.

After weeks of listening to nothing Exile on Main St bootlegs, the clearess of this sort of bothers me.

At first listen, I give it around 8.2 on the 10-point scale...not great but pretty good. Certainly enough to look for more by this guy. And as TMink points out, it's well recorded, at least for crummy computer speakers. (Is that what the new standard is going to be, the way '60s producers made their stuff to sound great for AM car radios?)

love it! What an infectious track from an exciting talent. The first two aren't bad either. Can't wait to hear what he puts out next month.

Great mixes too.
