The Collossal Dickitude of Mike Love (A Sadly Occasional Series)

Fucking words fucking fail me.

Seriously.

BEACH BOYS BREAK UP AGAIN -- BRIAN WILSON, 2 OTHERS, FORCED OUT
By Tony Hicks, Contra Costa Times

Mike Love, who owns the name of the Beach Boys, has canned three band members, including Brian Wilson.

Love announced that the group will split after finishing concerts this week in the U.K.. Wilson, widely considered the creative genius behind the band, Al Jardine and David Marks have been dumped from the group, according to the Huffington Post. The report said three did not find out they had been dropped until Love and Bruce Johnston released a public statement.
So Mike Love, who was lucky enough to participate in some of the most transcendently magical pop music moments of all time, over a decades long career, and most recently a few months ago....

...has decided to piss it all away.

What a dick.

Seriously, what a dick.

Although apparently the rest of the band -- particularly Dennis Wilson -- knew this from day one.

Seriously, what a dick.

It's like he thinks his dickitude is a legacy he must preserve at all costs, even when handed the chance of a lifetime to erase that image.

But supposedly he & Brian have been butting heads all tour over stuff like set lists -- Brian trusts the audience enough to include some rare & obscure material; Mike just wanted to rehash the hits with his usual contempt.

You know you're a dick when the guy with a lifelong history of serious mental problems comes across as more mature and grounded than you.

Clearly, he's one of those people who is simply beyond redemption.

I'm waiting for the handful of Mike Love defenders who always seem to appear on "Mike Love Dickitude" posts across the internet. Seriously, if anyone tries to justify this, please tear them a new one.

The biggest douche in show business strikes again!

And just how did he come to own the Beach Boys name anyway?

I was wondering that myself....

And the people that would go see the Mike Love version of this band are the same people who go to see The Drifters and The Platters even though all 9 of them are dead.

Is Mike Love confused enough to think he had something to do with the Beach Boys success?

John Lennon once said that you had to be pretty much be an asshole to make it in the music biz. If that's the case, Mike Love should have been bigger than The Stone, The Beatles, Elvis and Dylan combined.

He has no excuse for this action. What an incredible DICK!!!

Last man standing when everyone else left the band (some of them feet first). The only just revenge would be if Alan Klein was Mike Love's manager and he was signed to Morris Levy's record label.

"Dicktitude" says it all.

I blame myself for believing he'd cross the 50 year mark with his dignity restored. Oh well, back to the state fairs he goes. May all his corn dogs be rancid.

Mike Love has essentially been trying to push Brian out of the band since he caused "Smile" to be abandoned 40 years ago. Maybe Brian, Al and Dave Marks will try something on their own, I'm sure Brian would feel more at ease without having to bump up against Mike's ego all the time.

And now that I think of it, let's save a steaming hot cup of bile for Bruce Johnston, The Dick Behind The Dick; one of the most shameless coattail riders in music history. While Mike is out doing battle against the forces of decency, Bruce follows at a safe distance, whistling "Disney Girls," on his way to cash another paycheck.

"Dicktitude," indeed.

Not surprised. Mike Love's always been something of a prick.

I see some folks have started an online petition to get the reunion tour extended. I think a better idea is a pledge to never go to a show with Mike Love in it and to berate any venues that book such an act.

Yup. Can't say I'm all that surprised either. Flew over to Germany (from Iceland) to catch a BB show a couple of months ago 'cause I knew it would be now/then or never. A once in a lifetime kind-of-thing. Wasn't disappointed either, although Brian's band is always better (Tokyo '99, London '08). Also saw Mike's (and Bruce's) "Beach Boys" here in Iceland in '05. Just an OK trip down memory lane, but obviously, it'll never measure up to either Brian's band or the Beach Boys' 50th.
However, one thing regarding this 50th Anniversary show I was somehow shocked at seeing....how Brian had deteriorated since I last saw him live, forgetting lyrics and whatnot.
That being said, Mike "Love"...what a DICK!

I sincerely hope the Wondermints will not perform with this putz.

I hope I never get on your truly bad side Mr. Simels -- this is a take down for the ages, all the more powerful for its pent-up fury. This post will live long after Mike Love is gone ...

Mike Love has always been music's equivalent of that old political adage "born on 3rd base but thinks he hit a triple." I wish that he and BJ would just get it over with and finally put down stakes in Branson.

He did though (much as I dislike him) in his lead vocals and in writing lyrics

I remember years ago seeing the Beach Boys in Calgary at a sold out show. In the middle of the set Mike Love yells out, "what the hell is it with you people, there's no god damned beach within a thousand miles of this place." As if appreciating their music required a nearby ocean to surf on. As if many of the Beach Boys ever learned to surf. Such an offensive thing to say. "Hey everyone, you all came out and paid good money to see us, but there's no beach nearby, so go home." Everyone was just shaking their heads. It was a great show, otherwise. I still remember him insulting the audience. I couldn't believe it.
