Having listened to that song just now for the first time in decades, I have one question -- how the hell did Lehrer get away with that in 1953?

In answer to your question, Lehrer got away with it by self-publishing, releasing and distributing his own records and songs.
Reprise later bought them up and re-released them, but by then he was safe enough to be on tv.
