Girls! Girls! Girls! 80s Nostalgia Edition

I figured since I posted something by Kirsty MacColl yesterday, it might be time to dust the moth balls off this one.

Ms. Ullman's take on the song isn't as genuinely touching as Kirsty's original, but it's not at all hard on the ears and it certainly enlivened the airwaves back in 1983. Of course, the real reason to sit through the video is the cameo at the end by a certain newly minted member of British royalty....

I like the fuzzy steering wheel.

Thank you for that bit of Tracey Ullman--one of the truly great comediennes of our time. (I would be unsexist and say "comedians," but that demeans her talent. Comediennes are held to a much, much higher standard.)

I remember being surprised to find out that she was a comedienne--since this is the first I'd heard of her.

I'm pretty sure Kirsty sang the really high "baby" on Tracey's version (she's credited with vox on the LP). Also wonderful is the title track "You Broke My Heart in 17 Places."

I read somewhere that indeed Kirsty sang the "bay-bee" line on Tracey's version. There are few songs that elicit such a feeling of pure joy for me. Tracey is a good singer, and I understand that she insisted on punching up the wall-of-sound production, which I think pays of in spades. I love this version as much as Kirsty's less cluttered orginal.

If only some of Kirsty's songwriting zest could have rubbed off on Macca.

I didn't know Kirsty MacColl wrote that! Of course, in 1983 I didn't know who Kirsty MacColl was, but I really liked that song.

Listening to it now, it holds up great! A pretty-much perfect 60's/Motown-style pop number.

And of course the cameo by Sir Paul is awesome.
