Tom Waits For No One

For a variety of reasons I won't be posting again till tomorrow afternoon. In the meantime, enjoy this brilliant clip from the funniest TV show of all time.

Martin Mull, Fred Willard, Tom Waits, and "The Piano Has Been Drinking."

This is the bit where Waits famously says "I'd rather have a bottle in front of me than a frontal lobotomy."

I did enjoy the clip, as well as the Mike Douglas Show clip and a couple of others on the reel. "The Piano Has Been Drinking" easily has some of the most hilarious lines in any song of any genre you want to name. I'll save what I think are the two best for the inevitable Weekend Listomania on hilarious lyrics.

Has that show ever been released on DVD? I'm too lazy to check.

Damn, Waits is a friggin' national treasure, ain't he? Not exactly what I'd call powerpop, but pretty special all the same.

I caught him at the Bottom Line around the same time as this clip (soon after the release of Small Change). He was terrific--and really convincing in the role of serious drunk as well.

P.S. I forgot to note Martin Mull's uncanny resemblance to Bea Arthur in the frame grab from that clip. Thank you.

fucking awesome. I do remember what grade I was in when that show was on, but I'm not telling.

Martin Mull and Fred Willard are two more members of the "grew up in NE Ohio club".

We're teh the funny up yonder here. Tim Conway, Pat McCormack, Steve Harvey, Ghoulardi...Detroit may be rock city, but we're the comedy belt.

Ah yes, I remember staying up past my bedtime to watch Fernwood Tonight and look at Tom Waits so young cute and drunk how I do love a lush!
