Life is Short, But Cool is Forever

The great Dion, live circa 1963.

Pretty amazing quality footage, no? In any case, there are times I'm convinced he's the greatest rock singer who ever wore shoe leather.

He's much better and cooler than that very white band, that's for sure.

Dion's still cool even when he's surrounded by bizarre props:

What kinda crowd is that? Jesus, is he playing for a Billy Graham Crusade or something? What a bunch of stiffs. And the band --- not too rockin'. Is this his usual crew?

There are times I'm convinced you're right about Dion's stature as a rock singer.

I've probably shared this before, but it's worth hearing again. Here's a later non-hit from 1969's "Wonder Where I'm Bound".

"Now"

Verrrry cooool song BBJ. Not anthologized much either, that I'm aware. I got that album as a cut-out for 66 cents at Aron's in early 1969. Same day that I got a cut-out of John Kay and the Sparrow for the same price. The Dion record has some pretty good stuff, all of which was recorded in the mid 1960's. "Now," is the most underrated on that Columbia exploitation album. Sooo many interesting things going on with that arrangement. Simply delicious. And Dion penned it (with Carlo). The Wanderers played on this session and they deserve an appreciation of some sort. Tom Wilson produced this. Is it Al Kooper on organ? Nice nugget. Thanks.
