Your Thursday Moment of Words Fail Me: Special It's the Charlie Watts Show Edition

The Rolling Stones at the Marquee Club in 1971. "Live With Me."

You know, some days I'm as bored with these guys as everybody else is, but for Jeebus' sake -- this is astounding.

Were they the greatest rock 'n' roll band in the world at this point?

Fuck that -- they were the greatest rock 'n' roll band that ever wore shoe leather. Period.

Charlie's drumming alone...I don't even know where to begin. The whole thing sounds like Chuck Berry at his peak jamming with some out of control great punk band you never heard.

Charlie Watts was certainly the perfect drummer for the Stones, but he was also absolutely the best dressed man in rock.

I heard (from you) that he even put on a jacket and tie when he was going out to punch somebody!

Charlie is a class act.

Holy crap! Even more amazing is that this sounds like the first song of the set, if not the night. To be able to step right in and lock into that wicked groove like that... I'm speechless...

Well, you can hear his drums nice and clear, but this is sort of a tentative gig as far as the rest of the band goes. The London Roundhouse show from 1971 blows this one away. I always loved that old TMOQ bootleg even if it was just an audience tape. I have no problem with making the mental adjustment when it's a hot show. But now a good portion of it's on the new Sticky Fingers Super Deluxe version. And that's a fuckin' shot of salvation.

Gotta wash the surf, sand and sails off of me and get sanctified. Best sailing/sunning/scuba trip I've had in a long time.
