It's "Bob Dylan Covering Songs You Wouldn't Necessarily Expect Him to Cover" Week!: Part IV

From 2002, his Bobness covers George Harrison's "Something."

And from 2005..."London Calling" by The Clash.

Words fail me.

Have a great weekend, everybody.

As with the other tunes, his backing band is really good. As to Bob's "signature" vocal delivery, on "Something" his cadence is way too fast for the song. On "London Calling", his vocals sound like mush.

London Calling?

Either Bob has an enormous sense of humor or the largest set of gonads in the universe.
I vote for the first as he has enough sense to keep the performance short before it wears out it's welcome.

That whole fall 2002 tour was full of odd and wonderful covers by His Bobness. I think it's something he does when he feels a staleness creeping up on his work.

And though this is exceedingly rare, I have to disagree with the esteemed Billy B -- I've always loved this version of Something (the only one Bob ever did, IIRC -- it was a tribute mere days after George's passing). I think it's sweet & sensitive, and unusually faithful for Mr. D.

George was in the ground nearly a year before this singular 2002 version of "Something" was performed. It was a tribute to the Beatle on the eve of the "Concert For George." Dylan mentioned in the intro that he couldn't attend the Royal Albert Hall affair. The set closer for the tour was "All Along The Watchtower." For the MSG show, they played "Something" after the closer. This version is also available on the 3-CD 2002 tour retrospective bootleg, "A Voice From On High." I kinda like it.

Dylan has played "Something" one other time. Fittingly, in Liverpool during 2009.

"London Calling" snippet was done at a couple of the shows in Brixton 2005 as the beginning of the encore segment. I went to the 5-night run, since I happened to be in England November 2005 with Sandy. We were "visiting" an old boyfriend, a bent barrister that we could have easily taken down:-) This was our 2nd 5-night run in 2005, as we had already done the Pantages shows in Hollywood with Merle Haggard & Amos Lee, taping all three acts.

Half of the people in the London audience were recording to DAT. The taping thing was getting really silly at this point. There were lots of young people in attendance that had to get their Dylan ticket punched. Setlists were mostly ordinary and only slightly varied. But they opened with "Rumble" which was muy cool.

The 10-CD "Brixton Box" is the complete run of the shows. It also acts as a tour retrospective in that it has 37 bonus tracks of unique songs which were performed on the tour. Just a thought, if you're into sacred cow worship and can spare the moolah. It's the most efficient to be "complete":-) Mooo!

He's the Jimmy Durante of rock on some heavy, heavy Hava Nagila acid. The guy is a riot. The band acts as his 'straight man."
