Your Thursday Moment of And Speaking of Gorgeous

From her recently released (late 2019) new album, please enjoy the quite remarkable P.P. Arnold and a cover of Mike Nesmith's "Different Drum" that serves to put much of the (to me) inexplicable current Linda Ronstadt nostalgia into, shall we say, perspective.

Damn, that's great.

I should add that I was hipped to the existence of that album (the whole thing is amazing, BTW) over at friend of PowerPop Sal Nunziato's invaluable Burning Wood blog a few weeks ago. Which is one of the many things I've owed him for over the years.

I should also add that I was heretofore unfamiliar with Ms. Arnold beyond her original hit version of "The First Cut is the Deepest" and this fabulous appearance in my favorite Small Faces video.

But after hearing the new album, I looked her up over at Wiki here. Jeebus H. Christ on a piece of burnt challah toast -- this gal has been everywhere and done everything.

Don't knock Linda Ronstadt! I prefer this poorly mixed live garage band version:

Though I must admit that doing a whole retro orchestra thing on the P.P. Arnold track is an interesting choice.

That version is, er, historically interesting.

That said, that's exactly how I thought her early band probably sounded live. Which is to say -- wimpy and lame.

Never been a LR fan, but if the recent doc can be believed, I think she is entitled to professional respect for doing what she did and doing it her way.
What she did, of course, was to take music from a variety of genres and bland them down just enough to get a mass culture consumer product that many people now look back on as the joy of their youth.
that's America, dammit.

My problem with her is that she sings like a bird.

Unfortunately, a bird sings exactly the same when it’s happy as when it’s sad.

It's sweet to have a video with two of the greatest voices that ever adorned rock and soul together even if it's a lip sync. I love the period, the feel, and the emotion in the music. PP and Steve are loved together and separately. Makes me long for a time past which is part of the power of great music.
