Ginger Baker: Symptom or Disease?

The short version: He was, indisputably, a great drummer in his way, but none of the music he made, with any of the myriad bands he played with over the years, save for these two atypically pop-ish tracks by Cream...

...gave me any pleasure whatsoever.

I bring him up at this point in time becaue I had forgotten this 1974 ad from the old Village Voice musicians classified section, which totally cracks me up.

And yes, that's the ad Max Weinberg responded to. Heh.

I've always felt Cream were actually better as a studio band than as a live act. I saw them in 1968 in Chicago at a show that I remember being plagued by equipment issues. They seemed to be more interested, live, in showing off than anything else. That said give Disraeli Gears another listen. I think it's held up quite well over the years.

Give me Ginger Baker and I'll give you Lou Reed.

I understand why he’s not everyone’s cuppa tea. That said, “We’re Going Wrong” is terrific.

Bruce would've been better served with a Junior Ginger, a Mini Moon, or, surely Vinnie Lopez. But Bruce wanted a human metronome, and a metronome he got.
