RIP, Mike Smith, 1944-2008.
A wonderfully soulful singer, and like his band, vastly underrated.

When I was 14 The Dave Clark 5 was my favorite band in the world not the Beatles. They are still a hidden pleasure!
Return of the Plumber
Could do sensitive ballads ("Because") without sounding sappy because of Mike's husky voice.
And then tore it up with so much else - "Having a Wild Weekend" - "Bits & Pieces" - "Catch Us If You Can" - and covers of Motown ("Do You Love Me?") and New Orleans ("I Like It Like That") staples.
Great balance, great energy. Big loss. (And IIRC, another member passed last year.)

That would be Denny Payton, who played guitar, sax, and harmonica for the 5. See the Dave Clark Five Wikipedia entry for details.
"Because"--just one of my favorite songs of all time. RIP, Mike, and welcome you and the band to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
But why pick an ensemble vocal to represent him?
