Saturday Night Glam Blogging

Here's glam riffmeisters Slade with their 1972 #1 smash in England Mama Weer All Crazee Now. The band was huge across the pond, scoring an amazing 11 Top Five hits in a four-year span between 1971 to 1974. Cheers!

I remember seeing these guys on Midnight Special or something like it and, noting the boots, and the haircuts, thinking, "These guys aren't right."

Cool music though!

I love these guys and this song.

But at the height of their British celebrity, they played a show at my old college, and they drew like 50 people.

Somewhere I have a photo of them backstage after the show, where they're making the Slade thumbs up salute, except they're doing thumbs down.

They certainly didn't take themselves overly seriously...

Any band that has a guy named "Noddy Holder" in it is cool with me.

... yeah, baby!

I remember in that dry period between psychedelia and punk, Slade were one of the few hard-rocking groups around.

And in the era of album-length art projects, they played simple, catchy SONGS. Downright weird!

I didn't get the image at the time, though.

There's something downright unwholesome about these guys. They remind me of the times I used to see Simels fronting the Weasels at Eddie's Lounge. He's always denied having had any association with that band. But there's still a number of us who recall him in his big hair, limp wrist, days begging girls in the audience to participate in his Brian Jones lookalike contest.Unfortunately there's no old videos of the band.. Rumor is that some Weasel albums still exist....a friend of mine had a mint copy of Endless Bummer in his possession. Simels should own up to the fact that in the 70's he played no small part in destroying the glam rock movement in NJ.
