My New Least Favorite Band (An Occasional Series)

The Lone Bellow.

Who -- according to a piece in the Times yesterday -- are expected to save the music business.

Okay, as earnest lame folk rock bands go, these guys actually may not be so bad.

I mean, compared to Mumford and Sons or The Lumineers, these guys are...well, pretty good.

Maybe not Gram Parsons/Flying Burrito Brothers good, but possibly there's something here that might be worth paying attention to.

I should add that they're from Brooklyn, so I may be cutting them some slack.

"Is there something in the water all of a sudden that's causing really lame earnest folk rock bands?"

Perhaps it is a generation waking up to the reality that lip synching and sampling does not amount to art. And that they will actually have to learn to play some instruments and sing without auto-tune.

Of course, just because you do play an instrument and sing, doesn't guarantee your song will be good.

I sometimes enjoy this kind of "folky" music when it's good. This one isn't half bad. But clocking in at almost five minutes, a little too long. I still say, LET'S ROCK!!

As Burning Wood points out, sometimes all that folkiness does work. This song by Gillian Welch is jaw-dropping.

No sir, I don't like it. Maybe all that he does is wrong. I just don't approve enough even to download this from a random blog.

Pleasant enough, but nothing particularly memorable. Me thinks a bit too much Brooklyn slack is being cut. I think I have a couple dozen tracks like this on the cds that came with Paste Magazine before they folded.
