Monday Essay Question

The two greatest couplets in the history of rock 'n' roll are:

From "Midnight Moses" by The Sensational Alex Harvey Band in 1974...

"I wish I was a forest ranger...

Danger, danger, danger."

...and from 1968 and The Kinks' The Village Green Preservation Society...

"We are the Custard Pie Appreciation Consortium...

God save the George Cross, and all those who were awarded them."

Discuss.

With all due modesty, I would have to nominate this couplet from deep within the Weasel's catalogue:

"We'll have a drink, and maybe another...
I'll make some cracks, concerning your mother."

Now that sir, is poetry!

First thing that popped into my head...
BLOTTO: I Wanna Be a Lifeguard

Hardly any clothes
Sand between my toes
White stuff on my nose!

Now THAT is poetry. Eat yer heart out, Dylan.

The Artist Formerly Known As Sinfonian said...

From "Going the Distance," by Cake:

Bowel-shaking earthquakes of doubt and remorse
Assail him, impale him with monster-truck force.

Nothing short of brilliant.

Apart from tens of Bob Dylan songs, I always thought Townes Van Zandt, "Fare Thee Well, Miss Carousel" from TOWNES VAN ZANDT (1969), was (and remains) remarkable poetry

Well the drunken clown's still hanging 'round
But it plain the laughter's all died down
The tears you tried so hard to hide
Are flowin'

And a blind man with his knife in hand
Has convinced himself that he understands
I wish him well, Miss Carousel
But I gotta be a-goin'

Fellin' pretty frisky and rockin' today so:

Cream:

She's a witch of trouble messin' in the glue
If you don't watch out it'll stick to you

Alice:

You can be my slave and I'll be a stranger
We could be in passion we could be in danger

Zeppelin:

Been Dazed and Confused for so long it's not true.
Wanted a woman, never bargained for you.

Hey, hey, mama, said the way you move
Gonna make you sweat, gonna make you groove.

Billy Joe Royal / Deep Purple:

She's got loving like quicksand
Only took one touch of my hand

Deep Purple:

So far away from the garden we love
She is what moves in the soul of a dove

Alice again:

I'd lick her nylon seams
Like a hungry cat with cream

And the Stones:

Dandelion don't tell no lies
Dandelion will make you wise

The Stones

I can pick your face out from the front or behind
You may look pretty but I can't say the same for your mind

Vickie Rock - Never mind the forecast 'cause the sky has lost control
'Cause the fury and broken thunder's come to match my raging soul

The Sixties:

And in the end, the love you take
Is equal to the love you make

The Seventies:

I like your legs, they're soft to the touch
Wrapped around me, I like it so much

Well, you can yank me and you can crank me
But don't you wake up and try to thank me

Vickie Rock - Losing touch with reality and I'm almost out of blow
It's such a fine line, I hate to see it go

A few more and I'm out the door

She seems to glow brilliantly white
and her hair seems to shine in the night
With her feet unbelievably light and her teeth ready, sharpened to bite

and,

She knows just how to please her man - Softer than a baby lamb
But she's educated, Doesn't give a damn

finally,

One things not said too much, but I think it's true
They just get married cause there's nothing else to do,

Vickie Rock - They call her jaded strumpet. That girl sure blows my trumpet.

I saw her from the corner when she turned and doubled back and started walkin' toward a coffee colored Cadillac.
I was pushin' through the crowd tryin’ to get to where she's at, I was campaign shouting like a southern diplomat

Have you seen her face? Her eyes reflect the colors in the sky.
A warm familiar place to be swept into whenever she's close by.

Pleased to meet you, hope you guessed my name.
What’s puzzling you is just the nature of my game.

Vickie Rock - Yeah, darlin' gonna make it happen, take the world in a love embrace
Fire all of your guns at once and explode into space.

BTW

got LIFE if you want it! I like mine with lots of bananas and cream.:)

They lay down beside me, I made my confession to them. They touched both my eyes, I touched the dew on their hem
If your life is a leaf that the seasons tear off and condemn, they will bind you with love that is graceful and green as a stem

On the tabletops she's dancing, sit and smile into your beer
Turn around oh Cherry for me, let me know you know I'm here

You're a prima ballerina on a Spring afternoon
Change on into the wolfman, howlin' at the moon,

I am the bitch with the hot guitar
I am the air, the sun and stars

At thirteen they'll be learnin'
At fourteen they'll be burnin'

Serpentine sleekness
Was always my weakness

He swallowed his pride and puckered his lips
And showed me the leather belt 'round his hips
My knees were shaking my cheeks aflame
He said "You'll never go down to the Gods again"

I'm aching for you baby, I can't pretend I'm not
I love to see you naked in your body and your thought

You knock me out, you're like a well oiled Smith and Wesson
Dressed to the nines, don't look fifteen, there's no question
Don't need I.D. and there's no house detective to crowd you
Slip in the back and slip out of what ever you're into.

She's young, she's wealthy, she's far from healthy. She does it up in Beverly Hills
She wears a foam back bra, she drives her daddy's car. Has a pill to bend your will.

AC - DC
She's got some other woman as well as me

I'll give you something to live for
Have ya, grab ya, till you're sore

A flower lady's daughter
As sweet as holy water
Said, "I'm a school reporter
Please teach me", well, I taught her

Don't say a word, my virgin child
Just let your inhibitions run wild
The secret is about to unfold
Upstairs before the night's too old

Honey, you shake, I'll rattle, we'll roll on down the line
See if we can't get in touch with a very close friend of mine
But let me clue you in, it ain't like him to argue or pretend
Well, honey let me introduce you to my redneck friend

Nymphomanic nimrod bless your thigh high boots.
Feed your hungry minions playing blue veined flutes.
Keep on trucking, think of all the fun you had
You know there's such a lot of good ways to be bad

Almond eyes my Turkish pearl
Burn me up sweet oyster girl
Shove me in your steaming vat
Make me split like chicken fat

So I knelt there at the Delta at the Alpha, the Omega, at the cradle where the river meets the seas
And like a blessing come from heaven for something like a second I was healed and my heart was at ease.

Vickie Rock - Celebrating the power of womanhood and the Eve bitten apple in song.

P.S. I wish I was in Tijuana. Eating barbecued iguana.

They'll zip you up and dress you down and stand you in a row
But you know you don't have to, you can just say "no"

He's the crimson in your face du jour, the fiddler in your darkest night
He's the melody without a cure. Rome is burning, but that's all right

Plus these catchy lines from our national bird:

There she stood in the doorway, I heard the mission bell.
And I was thinking to myself this could be Heaven or this could be Hell.

No woman ever do what you do high on a pleasure wheel.
No devil ever cast a voodoo so long and dark and real.
