Weekend Listomania

Well, it's Friday and you know what that means.

Yes, my Oriental houseboy Kato and I are off to a Tibetan monastery where I will be initiated into the mysteries of Unendurable Pleasure Indefinitely Prolonged.

Could be a hot one!

Posting by moi will necessarily be sporadic as a result, but in the meantime here's a fun project for you all.

Best Pop/Rock Song in English But With a Couple of Lines or a Verse in a Foreign (European) Language!!!

My totally off the top of my head Top Three:

1. "Michelle" -- The Beatles
(optional Blindingly Obvious Award cheerfully accepted)

2. "Vera Cruz" -- Warren Zevon

3. "Funky Western Civilization" -- Tonio K.

Join in, won't you?

Couple of less-obvious Beatle numbers: "Across the Universe" ("jai guru deva - ommmmmmm!") and "Sun King" ("milo paparazzi mi amore ciccolini kam fong!")...

Bowling For Soup ("rock cred" be damned - I love these guys) have a toon called "On And On About You" that features the chorus sung in Spanish, and then immediately repeated in English, but introduced by "I just said - " That right there, with apologies to Mr. Sweet, is 100% fun. ^_^

As long as you brought up Tonio K, let's include H-a-t-r-e-d, with "Eins, Zwei, Drei, Vier!" Only one line, but quite to the point.

And I'll mention ELP's rather vapid "C'est la Vie"

"Eins, Zwei, Drei, Vier" is also used in The Rutles' "Blue Suede Schubert."

"Born to Die in Berlin," the last truly great Ramones song, with a verse in German, probably sung by Dee Dee.

Of course this list wouldn't be complete without the classic Bobby Vinton song "My Melody of Love". I challenge anyone to come up with another US hit featuring Polish.

"Sunday Girl" by Blondie, which was the song that inspired this challenge.

"Wordy Rappinghood" has some fully-fledged French phrases.

I was going to mention "Sunday Girl" too, which is my favorite song ever that was inspired by a cat.

"Hasta Manana Monsieur" by Sparks, with French, Spanish, and a little Japanese for good measure. Also contains the killer line "You mentioned Kant and I was shocked ... so shocked. You know, where I come from, none of the girls have such foul tongues"

"Moulin Rouge" by Tim Buckley, on Starsailor.

"jeux san frontieres." "Games without Frontiers" by Peter Gabriel. I kept trying to hear it as "She's so natural" or something.

Rapture, Blondie ... Also, Def Leppard's not-really German in Rock of Ages.

French Kiss by Lil' Louie. The language of love there baby. And some French, too.
