Yet Another Early Clue to the New Direction (Special Flogging a Dead Equine Edition)

From 1976, please enjoy the incomparable Patti Smith, my unrequited hearthrob for the last several decades, and a pretty fabulous live version (from Brit TV) of the classic title track from her debut album Horses. Eventually mutating into "Hey Joe."

As always, a Coveted PowerPop No-Prize will be awarded the first reader who gleans the clip's relevance to the theme of tomorrow's Weekend Listomania.

BTW, a chum forwarded this yearbook photo -- Deptford Township High School class of '64 -- the other day.

Words fail me, on several levels. Mostly, of course, I'm thinking she wouldn't have given me a tumble even then.

I'm also wondering what happened to Roger, but perhaps we don't want to know.

Nope, but that's a good one I may steal.

Loved the documentary of her. She was quite funny in that!

Now, I just saw something about 70's music sucking.
Not Patti.
Terrific find.
Thanks.

Patti's the best. Bullshit quotient and all.

Cult heroes who finally got hit records with Springsteen songs?

No guess on the clue, but I'm sure I've told my story about the day in the summer of 78 or 79 when I saw David Peel harrass Patti right out of Washington Square Park.

He was (and probably still is) such a complete and total asshole....

Hmm. Not ready to give another hint quite yet...

Songs that are tributes to an artist/muse?

I thought I was over Ms. Smith. Then a couple of years ago I ran into her while crossing the street, looking splendid in a long blue serge coat while staring right past me up the avenue. Suddenly, I felt like a lovestruck kid.

I know the feeling.

Okay -- the clue is something in the lyric.

Songs with guns?

Here's something I wrote about Patti a while back, not long after she came out of retirement.

One of my favorite "celebrity spots" of all time was Patti Smith, surrounded by friends/family, many of whom looked much like her in countenance and apparel, chowing down on huge platters of smoked fish at Barney Greengrass on Christmas Day a few years ago.

She's still skinny. Looks great actually. And the woman loves to eat. Cool.
