Mike Nesmith Explains It All To You

And speaking as we were recently of the late great Monkees auteur, here he is on an LA teen rock show -- just immediately before joining the band that made him famous, and doing business under the nom du disque Michael Blessing -- with an astoundingly good cover of Buffy St. Marie's "Until It's Time For You To Go."

And here -- from some time in the early 80s (around when I met him at the press party I described downstairs) -- here he is being typically deadpan funny on the Letterman show.

Fuck you, Morrissey -- THAT was a charming man.

Oh yes, the Lloyd Thaxton Show. It was also broadcast on a Tampa FL station in the afternoons.

For the kids we've got that new conceptual music video. Brilliant.

I credit MN for much of the a good bit of the fact The Monkees evolved into a close proximity of a real band. Mike was a real thinking talent (he only needed an audience to discover it) and Mickey was a manic energy talent ( he came alive before a live audience in a very special way). Peter and Davey couldn't help but be pushed into greater levels of their budding talents due to Mike. One might call Mike being in The Monkees the secret sauce that elevated everyone.
